Changes of a similar character were found also in human subjects during periods of different intensity of training: e.g., the deposits of fat in gymnasts decreased in spite of an increased caloric intake when training was intensive, but increased after interruption of training, even when the caloric intake was markedly reduced. Increased intensity of exercise caused the reduction of fat depared trained and untrained subjects. This applied to all age categories : preschool, adolescence, and adult and advance age.
Most marked changes were found in adult top athletes where the intensity of training was highest. In this case there was also a differentiation of dynamic and static sport disciplines : the lowest relative weight and depot fat ratio was found, e.g., in long distance runners, who achieved the highest levels of aerobic capacity.

Nutrition And Other Factors Influencing Physical Activity, Motor Development, And FatnessSports, genetic and constitutional predispositions are assumed to play a very important role in the achievement of highest level of performance. In the normal population, apparent differences in the level of spontaneous physical activity and motor skill, etc. can also be found that mostly seem to be of an inborn character. The range of spontaneous physical activity per unit of time varies markedly, as measured both in experimental animals and human subjects, even when other characteristics (age, sex, living conditions, etc.) are nearly identical ;however, in one individual it is fairly stable. Monozygotic twins are more similar than dizygotic twins in the total volume of physical activity, as well as in the structure of movements during special tasks. |

The Skeletal System: Bones And ArticulationsBone is a type of connective tissue and like all tissues it is composed of cells actively engaged in physiologic pursuits. Some of these cells produce the rocklike bone substance, while others bring about the dissolution of this substance for the purpose of supplying calcium to the blood. Furthermore, certain cells in the red bone marrow manufacture blood corpuscles at a prodigious rate. It is estimated that about 1 million worn-out red blood corpuscles are destroyed every second, and quite obviously new ones must be produced to replace them. Failure of the red marrow to comply leads to anemia and, if nonreversible, ultimately to death. Finally, the skeletal system brackets all the other systems, and in so doing it serves as a logical introduction to the human body. |
