Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, is a disorder where the shoulder joint painfully stiffens and loses mobility.

Frozen shoulder tends to come on gradually, usually in three stages. In the first stage, patients are afflicted with pain when they move their shoulder. The pain may become worse at night, sometimes to the point where it wakes the patient out of sleep. Gradually, the shoulder is able to move less and less. The pain decreases when the shoulder begins to “freeze,” but the shoulder grows stiff and its range of motion is even more restricted. Finally, there’s a thawing stage where the shoulder begins to be able to move again. This thawing stage might happen as long as two years after the onset of symptoms.

Most victims of frozen shoulder are women over forty. They also tend to suffer from conditions like diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disease and Parkinson’s disease. Tuberculosis also puts a person at higher risk for frozen shoulder.
