Hysterical aphonia is a functional disorder. It is not organic laryngeal paralysis. Patient with hysterical aphonia can not adduct the vocal cords when attempting to speak. Psychogenic condition subh as emotional may cause aphonia. The patient hopes to be relieved of an unpleasant duty through loss of his voice.  We can take an example ; if the amateur speaker is unable to prepare his topic,he will become aphonia. This condition make he able to cancel his speech without embarrasment.

Hysterical aphonia is differentiated from organic laryngeal paralyshs by having the patient cough. The cords meet brieflx and then separate slightly as the patient attempts to phonate. They actually meet when he coughs.

We may treat this condition by giving strong suggestion plus intralaryngeal drops of colored water. Go to the psychiatrist, may be the best treatment. We can give a strong psychic stimulus by giving electric shocks to the external larynx. These tricks may effective to make the voice is restored.  Sometimes, we treat the symptom rather than cause. A careful and painstaking examination will do much toward making the patient accept the strong reassurance that is needed. (doc R3nd5an)
